Retrovirus

Retrovirus

A retrovirus class of virus has genetic material that is encoded in RNA, instead of DNA. Nonetheless retroviruses need to use the cellular activities of an organisms that they infect, to make copies of themselves. The retrovirus genome needs to be reverse-transcribed into DNA by an enzyme called reverse-transcriptase before it can be copied in the usual way. For this reason it can be integrated into the genome of the cells that they infected. The infected cell copies those ‘new’ genes as part of its normal replication process.

Two of the most commonly known retroviruses are HIV and HTLV.

 

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). By killing or damaging cells of the body's immune system, HIV progressively destroys the body's ability to fight infections and certain cancers. People diagnosed with AIDS may get life-threatening diseases called opportunistic infections, which are caused by microbes such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites.

 

HTLV family of viruses (human T-lymphotropic virus or human T-cell lymphotropic virus) are a group of human retroviruses that are known to cause a type of cancer called adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.
